Why do they make such things?

Every now and then while browsing the internet, I come across some products which are a criminal waste of money. I came across a list of the most expensive mobile devices in the world. Some of them are encrusted with diamonds, some others are made up of Gold like the Nokia 8800. One diamond phone was worth 1 million US dollars. I fail to understand the reason for companies to come up with such products. I got this list from a website which blogs about mobile phones.

Just imagine, if someone were to put a million dollars to some good constructive use and help out those who are starving, I believe that money would then be well spent. Rather than spending money on such cheap PR stunts, these mobile phone retail giants must donate the sum for a cause and transform lives. They should be well aware of their corporate social responsibilities.

It is amazing how so much of time and effort is wasted in crafting a toy which would be of no more use to anybody, but to just make voice calls ! Needless to say, the companies would fetch a handsome amount of money if they manage to sell the phone. I believe some celebrity or a rich businessman will go for the phone and splurge this vulgar amount to get the gadget.

Spending money to ensure day to day comfort is acceptable, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Spending money for show is vulgar. It is important for people to respect money and spend it sensibly. This goes for the rich as well as for the poor.

What do you think?

  1. I totally agree. People will threaten your life for much less than this, so you couldn’t even use it in public…and what’s the point of it except to show it off to someone else. Stupid.

People with this much excess money should donate it to charity.

  3. Once again a reminder of the obscene disregard for human life is brandished for all to see. How utterly senseless the modern world is. Im a nurse, I see human deprivation, physical and mental, on a daily basis, reminding one of the vulnerability of human beings. Such suffering could be erradicated all over the world, if only the money that is spent on such rediculous eccentricities was better spent caring for the real people, the masses without huge wealth.

  5. Ummmm, because they can!

As silly as it sounds I am sure there is a market. They are after the market of the celebrity and politician. You know, the ones with 10-15 bodyguards hanging around. They are not after the mass consumer market.

  6. Yes shadow..the market is for the celebrities..as i have written in the post itself..

  7. I’ve always found unnecessary spendings to be in bad taste, to be honest. Granted, I don’t have a problem with people treating themselves to a luxury now and again, as I think it’s good to do something for one’s own enjoyment now and again, but I agree: a one-million-dollar cellphone is a bit more than “treat.”

  13. Ugh, i hate even thinking about this. THe sad thing is that so many children grow up believing that status symbols such as these equate to power and value. Of course they want this stuff when their favorite celebs/musicians are carrying it around constantly, basically just acting as walking advertisements. c’est la vie.
